“Drop R Kelly” Banner Flown Over Sony HQ Amid Widespread Sexual Assault Allegations

"RCA/Sony: Drop Sexual Predator R. Kelly."
A protest banner against R Kelly has been flown over Sony headquarters in California, demanding that the singer is dropped from the label after facing a slew of sexual misconduct allegations.

The banner, which was organised by the women’s group Ultraviolet, also took aim at RCA – a Sony subsidiary that Kelly has been constantly linked to.

It comes after the Surviving R Kelly documentary featured testimonies from a slew of women who accused the star of sexual assault. He has constantly denied any wrongdoing.

Yesterday’s stunt saw a plane being flown above the Culver City offices, alongside a banner that read: “RCA/Sony: Drop Sexual Predator R. Kelly.”

Speaking to Variety, Ultraviolet boss Karin Roland said: “It is long past time for RCA to dump R. Kelly and take a stand against abuse.

“Their inaction is beyond shameful. RCA can no longer pretend that R. Kelly’s music can be separated from his violent actions. Kelly uses his fame, musical talent, fortune, and standing in the music industry to lure in and abuse young Black girls.’
Roland added: “Sixty percent of Black women are sexually abused by age 18, but their abuse is written off because of harmful racial stereotypes that paint Black women and girls as more sexually promiscuous and aggressive than young white girls. We must believe and support Black survivors of sexual violence. It is time all of us work alongside the amazing Black women organizers calling out R. Kelly and his enablers to ensure justice.”

Yesterday (January 11), Kelly issued a new denial of the claims against him through his lawyer, Steve Greenberg. The lawyer told the Associated Press: “The allegations aren’t true because he never knowingly had sex with an underage woman, he never forced anyone to do anything, he never held anyone captive, he never abused anyone.”

It comes after police in Georgia confirmed that Kelly was facing criminal investigation after the TV series aired. Sources claim that the Fulton County District Attorney’s office is looking into allegations of sexual abuse, and have contacted multiple women as a result of the allegations which were made in Surviving R. Kelly.

Lady Gaga also spoke out after recording the duet ‘Do What U Want (With My Body)’ with Kelly, which was released as a single from her third album ‘Artpop’ in 2013.

In a statement she confirmed that the song would be withdrawn from streaming services.

Yesterday, Kelly’s daughter broke her silence to describe him as a monster.
